| Abstract | Position paper on the network structure of social capital. Three summary points: (1) research and theory will better cumulate if we focus on network mechanisms rather than trying to integrate across metaphors losely tied to empirical indicators; (2) empirical evidence shows that social capital depends more on brokerage of structural holes than on closure, but there are also contingent factors to be accoutned for; (3) complementarity effects: structural holes are the source of value added, but closure can be essential to realizing the value buried in those holes. |
